This is the first post in a series of articles in which I will discuss the process of obtaining a temporary child custody order in the state of Nevada. I feel it is necessary to address this topic as there are a number of situations in which parents require an immediate structure with regards to child custody. Such situations can involve parents who have never been to court, parents who are facing an emergency, and more. The goal of my coming articles is to provide information which will help people to better understand their situation. It is also my goal to provide information which will assist with the selection of a family law attorney. If you or a loved one are in need of assistance then contact my office today to speak with a lawyer.
I will be addressing a number of topics over my coming articles. Matters which I will discuss include:
- Filing for temporary custody due to an emergency
- The need to contact a lawyer, and not CPS, when seeking temporary custody
- Making a temporary custody order permanent
I feel it is necessary to address these topics for a number of reasons. First, the legal system can move very quickly when a child’s physical or mental well being is in legitimate danger. Second, there are very few situations in which a parent should contact Child Protective Services before calling a lawyer. Doing so may, in fact, result in the reporting parent receiving less time with the child. Finally, while the Court will issue a temporary order at the beginning of a case or the early stage of a request for a change, it is important that parents understand the process of making the order permanent.
It is important that you speak with an attorney as soon as possible if you or a family member are in need of a temporary child custody change. If the situation is urgent, and you wait to file a Motion with the Court, the Judge may have doubts that the matter is truly an emergency. By speaking with counsel sooner, rather than later, you can gain a full understanding of your options and commence with the best course of action. I am a Las Vegas child custody lawyer who devotes her practice to domestic relations law. I understand the serious nature of such matters and my office prides itself on providing quality service.
