This is the first post in a series of articles which will discuss the process which one typically faces when going through a divorce in Las Vegas, Nevada. I feel it is important to write on this topic as many individuals are considering ending a marriage but are apprehensive about beginning the process of doing so. Some of this apprehension may stem from not knowing what to expect from the legal process. I am writing this series, therefore, with the goal of providing information which will help people to better understand their situation. It is also my goal to provide information which will assist with the selection of an attorney. If you or a loved one are in need of assistance then contact my office today to speak with a lawyer.
I will be addressing multiple topics over my coming articles. Issues which I will be analyzing include:
- The process of initiating a divorce
- What to expect at the initial court hearing
- The importance of discovery
- Attending trial
- Possibly resolving the case through mediation
- The benefits of an uncontested divorce
I have chosen to write on these topics for multiple reasons. First, knowing what to expect from the early stages of a case, and throughout the process, can help one to make a more informed decision as to whether they wish to file a case. Second, contrary to what is often shown in the media, trials are not won with “surprise” evidence. Instead, cases are established with the presentation of evidence that is gained through discovery. Third, very few cases actually go to trial and the majority are able to settle. Attending a private mediation can help to facilitate a settlement. Finally, if the parties are in agreement on all issues then they may utilize the uncontested divorce process.
An important point that I will stress in each of these articles is that one should contact an attorney as soon as possible if they or a loved one are in need of assistance. Divorce cases can involve complicated issues of fact and law and having experienced counsel can help to ensure that your rights are protected from beginning to end.
