This article is being written to conclude and recap my series on collecting back child support in Las Vegas and other southern Nevada areas. I considered this an important topic to address as the topic of arrears often causes both confusion and tension between parents. I wrote this series, therefore, with the goal of providing information which will help people to better understand their situation. It has also been my goal to provide information which will assist with the selection of a family law attorney. If you or a family member are in need of assistance then contact my office today to speak with a lawyer.
I addressed a number of topics over my recent articles. These topics included the following:
- Nevada parents can collect four years of back child support
- Tolling Nevada’s child support statute of limitations
- Filing to collect unpaid child support
- How back child support is calculated
- Collecting back child support after a judgment has been filed
There are several reasons why I chose to address these particular topics. First, Nevada does not allow a parent to wait an indefinite period of time before enforcing their rights. Our state’s revised statutes only permit a parent to collect up to four years of unpaid support. Second, this four-year limitation can be tolled by sending a demand for payment to the other parent. Disputes can arise, however, in regard to whether the demand was actually sent. Third, filing to collect support is handled as part of a broader child custody action. Finally, knowing how to collect support and how it is calculated is crucial to managing one’s expectations.
An important point I made in each of these articles is the importance of retaining counsel to assist you in any family law dispute. By filing a child custody case, you can resolve all issues of visitation and health insurance while also dealing with support. As a family law attorney, who only handles domestic relations cases, I am experienced in the handling of such matters.
