child support and justice scaleThis article is being written to conclude and recap my series on arrest warrants related to unpaid child support in Las Vegas, Nevada family law cases. I considered it important to write on this topic as parents, on both sides, sometimes have misinformed opinions as to how the Court will handle such matters. This lack of information can lead to unnecessary fighting and hostility. I wrote my recent articles, therefore, with the goal of providing information which will help people to better understand their situation. It has also been my goal to provide information which will assist with the selection of an attorney. If you or a family member are in need of assistance then contact my office today to speak with a lawyer.

I addressed several topics over my recent articles. Issues which I analyzed included the following:

I chose to address these particular topics for multiple reasons. First, if a warrant has been issued for one’s arrest then it is important that they take care of it as soon as possible. Failing to do so can result in incarceration, the loss of driving privileges, and more. Second, it is important that one actually go through the legal process of requesting that the Court quash the warrant. Simply sending money to the other parent will not automatically make the warrant go away. Third, the answer as to whether one can go to jail for not paying support is “yes.” It should be understood, however, that the Court will typically only use incarceration as a last result. Finally, judges will typically hold status checks before issuing a warrant.

A key point I made in each of these articles is that parents on either side should contact an attorney as soon as possible for matters involving unpaid child support. Some do not realize that this is an actual violation of a Court Order to not pay support. Others do not realize, for example, that visitation and support are viewed as separate issues. Counsel can help parents to understand their rights and obligations in such situations.
